In September 2008, Octopedingenue posted to her Livejournal asking for examples of manga and anime that passed the Bechdel Rule. This blog came about as a place to compile the results of that query and to allow more people to have an input.

For a media work to pass the test, it has to have

1. At least two women in it,

2. Who talk to each other,

3. About something other than a man.

That’s all.

But wait! you say. What if the two women are minor characters, appear in only one scene, don’t have names, don’t talk about anything important, etc?

No matter! The 3 above listed criteria are all that is required! Feel free to describe with brilliant sarcasm how this series only passes by a technical cat’s whisker, but it still gets a pass. Because this serves to highlight in contrast the Epic Fail of other series that cannot even include two anonymous representatives of a gender to talk about the weather. And it will be easier to use this list to later compile a list of series that adhere to the letter of THE RULE but not the spirit than it would be the other way around.
